Crick Insight lectures are delivered by public figures who have an interest in science, but come from different walks of life. Occasional but inspirational talks, they aim to inform and inspire discussion beyond the Crick’s immediate research.
We're delighted to welcome Julia Gillard 27th Prime Minister of Australia and now Chair of the Wellcome Trust to give this Insight Lecture.
Julia Gillard is the 27th Prime Minister of Australia (2010-13)-she transformed education and healthcare in Australia during her tenure as PM and is the first and only female to be both PM and Deputy PM in Australian history.Since 2021 she has been Chair of Wellcome, a global charitable foundation which supports science to solve urgent health challenges.
Julia’s career has been dedicated to improving access to quality education and healthcare, and empowering women to take up positions of leadership across all areas of society. She has written two books about women in leadership and a life in public service.
Julia is Patron of the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED); she is the Inaugural Chair of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London and Chair of Beyond Blue, a mental health charity in Australia. In 2017, she was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia for services to economic and social development in Australia. She was named one of BBC’s 100 Women in 2018.
