The CrickConnect team are delighted to be able to invite community members to join us for the institute's regular Crick Lecture.
Crick Lectures provide a broad insight into biomedical research from leading scientists. Not to be missed, the one-hour lectures are the event of the week for the Crick community to come together. The lectures aim to be accessible to scientists across different disciplines, while also offering something for the specialist.
There is also an opportunity to catch up with colleagues and friends over refreshments after Crick Lectures from 17:00. If you are able to join us in person at the Crick please let us know at connect@crick.ac.uk so we can arrange access.
We are pleased to welcome Kai Johnsson, Director of the Department of Chemical Biology at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Medical Research, and Professor at EPFL, to give this week's lecture
Kai Johnsson is Director of the Department of Chemical Biology at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Medical Research, and Professor at the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).
His current research interests focus on the development of chemical approaches to visualize and manipulate biochemical activities in living cells. In the past he has introduced a number of widely used research tools and used these tools to make biological discoveries.
He introduced methods to specifically label proteins in living cells (i.e. SNAP-tag and CLIP-tag), developed new fluorescent probes and sensors, and conducted studies on the mechanism of action of drugs and drug candidates.
Kai Johnsson obtained his Diploma and PhD from the ETH Zürich in Switzerland. He joined the faculty of EPFL in 1999 and in 2017 became Director at the MPI for Medical Research. Since 2021 he has been Executive Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Awards
Kai received the Prix APLE for the invention of the year 2003 of EPFL, the Novartis Lectureship Award 2012/13, the Karl-Heinz Beckurts Prize 2016, the Family Hansen Award 2021 of the Bayer Foundation and is elected member of EMBO.
Due to the pioneering and sensitive nature of some of the research discussed in these lectures, only Crick Lectures from selected speakers will be shared, and we ask all attendees to respect the private nature of these talks by refraining from making any type of recording, sharing access details or in any other way compromising the research that is discussed.
If you'd like to attend in person please let us know at connect@crick.ac.uk
