Satellite group leader Corinne Houart has received the award for her use of innovative approaches to offer new insights into vertebrate neurodevelopment, as well as her dedication to mentoring young researchers.

Corinne's award

The Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard (CNV) Award is presented by the European Zebrafish Society to honour the outstanding contribution in the field of genetics of the Nobel Prize winner Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard. The award is given for outstanding achievements in Zebrafish research.

Corinne has been Professor of Developmental Neurobiology since 2008 and Vice Dean (2023-) for Research at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London. She is satellite group leader of the Crick's Brain Development and Evolution Laboratory, which aims to understand the fundamental cellular, molecular and morphogenetic mechanisms required to build the vertebrate brain.

Corinne's work is recognised for providing valuable insight into conserved molecular mechanisms underlying neural development, especially forebrain development. Her lab's findings have not only deepened our understanding of the brain, but also revealed mechanisms underlying human brain disorders.

Corinne's award also celebrates her pivotal role in mentoring the next generation of scientists and building a thriving and collaborative community. Many of Corinne's mentees have gone on to make significant leading contributions to the field.

I am touched by this recognition, coming from the research community in which I grew up as scientist. The zebrafish research field was very small when I joined and led by outstanding scientists with vision and a unique collaborative inclusive ethos that my generation thrived to transmit. I am deeply grateful for the nurturing environment in which I developed (as a research leader and educator) and for my amazing team members, colleagues and students I worked with over 25 years. This award is theirs.
