Our next destination data shows that around 30% of Crick Postdocs with a known next destination leave the UK to pursue an academic career. This panel consists of Crick alumni (ex-postdocs who left the Crick since 2024), who have moved to PI roles abroad.

This session is open to all thinking about their next steps (specifically those looking to pursue an international academic career) to find out more about the systems, recruitment processes, and type of roles available in other countries by hearing about the experience of, and advice from, alumni who have done it themselves.

Confirmed panelists so far include:

• Roopesh Anand: Institute of Molecular Biology, Mainz Germany. Dr Roopesh Anand joined the Crick as a Postdoc leaving in February 2024 where he joined IMB starting his own lab focusing on the repair of DNA double-strand breaks by homology-directed repair pathways.
• Clare Weeden: Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne Australia. Dr Clare Weeden is a Laboratory Head in the Personalised Oncology Division at WEHI, studying the impact of climate change upon respiratory health, including lung cancers. She completed her PhD and postdoctoral studies at WEHI, supported by a Lung Foundation Australia Early Career Fellowship and Cure Cancer/Cancer Australia project grant. Dr Weeden was then awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie/European Respiratory Society Postdoctoral Fellowship to join the laboratory of Prof Charles Swanton at the Francis Crick Institute in London before returning to WEHI to start her lab. Clare’s research centres upon the mechanisms regulating lung epithelial stem cell fates in response to the inhaled environment, with the aim of designing new early detection and intervention strategies for respiratory diseases.
